Texas Long Range Plan for Technology

The Texas Long Range Plan for Technol0gy has four areas which are: Teaching and Learning, Educator Preparation and Development, Leadership/Administration and Instructional support, and Infrastructure for Technology. The Teaching and Learning area is a broad topic. Students learn in so many different ways. They benefit from reading, communicating with others, listening to lectures, and researching it themselves. Online learning is a great way for students to learn. Online learning allows for students across the state of Texas to be on an equal playing field. All students have access to the same information if they have access to the internet. Our school scored Developing Technology in the areas of Teaching and Learning, Educator Preparation and Development. We scored Advanced Technology in Leadership/Adminstration and Instructional Support and Infrastructure for Technology

In the STaR Chart in the Teaching and Learning section for our school in the 2006-2007 school year, we scored a 13. In the 2007-2008 and the 2008-2009 we scored a 14. In all these years we had Developing Technology. The other high schools in our district/area also scored the same in the Teaching and Learning field. In 2006-2007 74% of the state was at a Developing Technology in the Teaching and Learning section. In the 2007-2008 school year 70% of schools were at the Developing Technology. The progress is good because more schools were at the Advance Technology. Every district needs to try to improve to Advanced Technology.

The trends in the state have really changed in the last couple years. Everything is based on computers. One district nearby has given all the middle school students laptops to do their assignment. Another district has it where parents can get online everyday and check every single grade the student has in every class. I think both of these are helping student success. Both of these school districts scored better at the Teaching and Learning section. Every school in our district has a library that teachers can take their class to so they can work on the computers. Also there is a computer lab where two classes can go at a time to so they can work on computers. We have many basic and advanced computer classes that students can take. Our school also has a computerized phone system where we can have parents contacted about what is going on in the classroom.

Our district should allow teachers to post students grades online. This will allow the parents to stay up to date with their kids' grades. They can ask their kid why they didn't turn in an assignment or why they received a bad grade. I also think it would be a good idea to give students laptops they can carry around. Many students can type faster than they can write so they can get their work done faster. It will also allow them to edit their work for the next assignment. It will make them faster on the computer and they will become more knowledgeable. To do this however teachers need to be trained on what programs will be most beneficial for the students. Students use computers everyday when they go home. I think it will benefit them if we allow them to use computers more in the classroom.

Pre-K Technology Applications TEKS

In pre-kindergarten they expand their ability to acquire information, solve problems, and communicate with others. Regular access and exposure to computers and related technology can enhance this learning. These students use a variety of input devices and begin learning the technical terminology. Many times students have a hard time determining what words go to what on the computer, so it is great that they are starting so young now. In pre-kindergarten they can follow basic oral or pictorial cues for operating programs and uses varieties of software packages with audio, video, and graphics to enhance learning experience. This is enhancing their vocabulary for when they get in higher grades. By starting at this level they come into school in elementary by learning all the basics and are able to build on that just like any other subject in school. When they get to high school they should be excelling on technology applications. These technologies serve as an important learning tool and are integrated throughout the instructional program.

One of the foundations TEKS that students learn in is to compare and contrast. They can appropriately use the various input, processing, output, and primary/secondary storage devices. by the time they graduate they will have been taught how to process and output information in and out of storage devices. Students start early in pre-kindergarten and by the time they graduate they will have mastered it. Another TEKS that is taught throughout the school levels is to plan, create, and edit databases by defining fields, entering data, and designing layouts appropriate for reporting. Later in high school they use that knowledge to develop and solve more complex problems. Schools must start with basic layouts and then have them set up codes for the programs is a good way of spiraling their knowledge.

Long Range Plan

I have learned a great amount of information on technology and what the importance of it is in the classroom. I did not realize that we are moving to a technology driven world so quickly, and it is important that our students are educated on technology starting at the pre-kindergarten level. Each year we must challenge them and allow them to use more technology. Students might not have the technology at home, so we must provide it in the classroom. Teachers need to use the technology that they have available to them. It is the job of all teachers to see what technology they have available on the campus and to use it. Many times the technology is available on campus, but teachers might not be aware of it. Workshops need to occur on campus for teacher to find out about these ideas. Department heads need to be knowledgeable of the resources available. If new or updated technology is needed it needs to try to get put into the budget. We need to get students access to the computers as much as possible. As educators we have to teach the students the proper way and format to use various devises. Teachers must become knowledgeable of the skills it takes to use the new technology. New technology is coming out every year. Teachers need to stay caught up and updated on all of these. We need to make sure the students are engaged in learning when we are teaching these subjects. After looking at the Long Range Plan we need to make sure we incorporate technology in our lesson plans. We must build and teach from the basics so the students will understand.

Reflection on Technology Assessments

Technology Application Inventory
The Technology Application Inventory was a survey on how much we knew about technology. There were four sections to it: Foundations, Information Acquisition, Soving Problems, and Communication. Out of the eighteen questions in the Foundation section of the Technology Application Inventory, I had thirteen yes answers and five no responses. This section is where I had the most yes answers. Two of the questions I answered no to dealt with memory on the computer, which I know I need to learn more about. In the Information Acquisition section I scored my lowest yes responses. I only had three out of the ten questions. I definitely need to learn more about these functions on the computer. Many of these questions I answered no to were about how to use different files on the computer such as graphic, image, audio, video files. If I learned how to do these programs I would be able to create more creative projects. I had ten yes responses out of eighteen in the next section which was Solving Problems. The ones I answered no to again had to deal with different graphs and graphics. I need to learn these. I know they teach these at my school in the BCIS class. I need to spend more time there and pick up these different tools and techniques. In the last section of Communication I had eight yes answers out of twelve. A couple of the ones I answered no to again had to deal with graphics and charts again. I know it is probably something easy for me to learn. I just need to spend time with someone that knows how to do it. I know when I now and even more when I become an administrator I will need to know these systems. I will need to be able to make graphs and put them on powerpoint presentations.

Strengths and Weaknesses
The survey showed that the Foundations area was my greatest strengh in Technology. I know many of the basics of Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and Excell. I would have to agree with the survey because I do not know a large amount of computer terminologies. it showed I am the weakest in Information Acquistion. I am not up to date on all the latest programs that perform video, audio, and graphics. I also do not know where many of the files and drives on my computer are located. I plan on spending time with the BCIS department and learning more about these technologies. I take a couple staff development classes a year on trying to keep up with some of these new techniques.

SETDA Teacher Survey
The SETDA Teacher Survey is about technology use at my school. I use technology everyday when I lecture with my powerpoint slides. Technolgoy is usually available at my school. I have a computer at my desk and have a laptop I use the powerpoint presentations. The school is installing mounted projectors from the ceiling so know I will not have to use my laptop and portable projector. I have six student computers in my room. I wish I had enough for every student in my class. When I give the students projects they have to work in groups of four or five so each group has access to the computer. Students use computers everyday when they get home. I try to have my students do research on the computer about once a week. This gets the students ready for college when they will have to look things up for themselves and it also allows us to get more in depth in our lessons in class. I am currently having them make their own powerpoint presentation they will present in front of the class. We have a computer lab and the library where we can take our classes to so that everyone gets a chance on the computer. The computers are newer and have good software on them. The students really enjoy the time they have on the computers.
